Cela faisait longtemps que je n’avais pas parlé de sexe sur le Best of Bestioles. Il est temps de réparer cette injustice ! Pour cela, rien de tel qu’une belle perversion sexuelle.
Attention, l’histoire qui suit peut choquer les plus sensibles d’entre vous (si après ça, vous n’avez pas envie d’aller au bout de ce billet !). En outre (jeu de mots), une espèce « trop mignonne » va en prendre pour son grade !
La bestiole du jour est une loutre, plus précisément une loutre de mer de Californie (Enhydra lutris nereis), l’une des trois sous-espèces. Elles sont trop adorables !

Euh non, là ce n’est pas une femelle, c’est un mâle. Et ce n’est pas une jeune loutre que l’on aperçoit sur son ventre, c’est un bébé phoque ! Et il est mort… Comment ? La loutre l'a violé, ce qui l’a tué (le bébé phoque).
Dans une étude parue en 2010, Heather Harris, du département californien de la pêche et de la vie sauvage, et ses collègues ont rapporté près de 20 agressions de ce type, en 2 ans, ayant conduit à la mort d’une quinzaine de bébés phoques communs Phoca vitulina richardsi. Au moins trois mâles loutres seraient en cause.
Les biologistes racontent : « un phoque, récemment sevré, qui se reposait sur le rivage a été attrapé par une loutre. Elle l’a saisi avec ses dents et ses pattes de devant, puis lui a mordu le nez avant de retourner l’animal. Le phoque est parvenu à rejoindre la mer, suivi de près par la loutre. Une fois dans l’eau, elle a de nouveau agrippé le phoque et a lacéré son nez. Ils se sont violemment débattus pendant 15 minutes, puis la loutre s’est mise sur le dos du phoque, en position typique d’accouplement, en lui retenant la tête. La loutre a dégagé son pénis et l’intromission a bien été observée. 105 minutes après le premier contact, la loutre a relâché sa victime, désormais morte, et a commencé sa toilette. »
Le viol ne fait pas de doute, les blessures observées lors d’autopsies en attestent.
Dans certains cas, les loutres ont conservé pendant 7 jours le corps du bébé phoque qui avait subi leurs assauts.
Aussi étonnant que cela paraisse, l’accouplement entre deux loutres suit un scénario similaire, la femelle n’en réchappant parfois pas. Cependant, elle est plus solide que le bébé phoque et s’en sort plus souvent. Néanmoins, les traumatismes liés à l'accouplement étaient responsables de 11 pour cent des décès recensés entre 2000 et 2003.
Comment expliquer l’outrage fait aux phoques ? Les loutres sont polygames. Les mâles les plus forts contrôlent des territoires où de nombreuses femelles s’établissent et d’où ils chassent tous les autres mâles. Ces derniers, sans contact avec les femelles, sont relégués dans des zones particulières. La situation devient grave quand, et c’est le cas dans la baie de Monterey, en Californie, une baisse de la population de loutres atteint surtout les femelles sans que l’on sache l’expliquer. En conséquence, il y a plus de mâles matures frustrés ! L’agressivité est exacerbée et les mâles se « rabattent » sur les malheureux bébés phoques.
Qui plus est, parmi les trois mâles repérés, deux ont séjourné à l’aquarium de la baie de Monterey dans le cadre d’un programme de réhabilitation pour les loutres blessées et isolées. Ce qu’elles ont subi avant leur convalescence est peut-être en cause dans leur comportement.
